Bismarck, the super battle ship of the Germans was indeed a splendid piece of floating armament. It was considered as one of the finest battleships of the time and hence Adolph Hitler was against the idea of using such a fine piece of a ship to be destroyed by the enemies during the Second World War. Opposed to his fears, the ship was departed to the Straits of Denmark along with another battle cruiser Prinz Eugen, for its inaugural raid.

The battleship Bismarck was intercepted by the British naval ship, the Hood which was considered a match against the Bismarck. The day was May 24, 1941. The Hood seemed no match against the Bismarck which was shelled in such a way that its entire crew of 1400 members was wiped off and there were just 3 survivors. However the attack gave a serious wound to the Bismarck as its fuel system had been hit, leaving a leak.

Before the Bismarck could reach the French shores and get their ship repaired, the British destroyers and carrier crafts that shadowed it made aerial attacks. As the chances of these warships, loaded with single torpedoes hitting the Bismarck were very slim, the British just crossed their fingers for a miracle. And that happened when one of the torpedoes hit the rear of the Bismarck resulting in a loss of the ship’s ability to steer. Unable to steer to safety to the French shores, the Bismarck was intercepted by British forces who shelled nearly 400 shells on the ship. This was the 27th of May, 1941 and the sinking of the Hood had been avenged.

The next morning on the 27th of May the Bismarck was caught motionless in the water and it finally sank at around 10:40 in the morning. Out of the 2,200 crew members only 115 were rescued and the rest perished. The sinking of the Bismarck, as per some historians has been termed as a savior of the world from the Nazi domination.
